I took this picture last Saturday. The sun was going behind a cloud. I did not see the vertical light. You can see a rainbow of color in front of the temple as well. I am anxious to learn more about light, defusing and all the new big photography words to add to my vocabulary. Can anyone explain to me what happened in this pic?

I really really like this picture!!! The light and rainbow are a glare from your lens. You can avoid this by buying a polarizing filter for your lens. These are TOTALLY worth the money - they only cost about $12-15 and they protect your actual lens from scratches and dirt. It's better to spend a few dollars up front than having to spend hundreds later in buying a new lens. You also have to be careful taking direct pictures of the sun - it can ruin your camera. BUT.... I really like the picture and think it's very unique!
